Coronavirus: UK records 4,926 new cases - highest daily figure in four months | UK News

Another 4,926 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK - the highest daily figure since 7 May.

A further 37 people have also died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 - the highest number reported in one day since 14 July.

Most of Tuesday’s cases were reported in England - 4,187 - with 383 in Scotland, 281 in Wales and 75 in Northern Ireland.

All of the newly reported deaths were in England, apart from one in Scotland.

On Monday, 4,368 coronavirus cases were confirmed across the UK and 11 deaths reported.

Today’s data takes the overall number of confirmed UK cases to 403,551.

A total of 41,825 have died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus, but separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,500 deaths registered in the UK where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate.

PM: New restrictions could last ‘six months’

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed a range of new restrictions to help slow the spread of the virus in England, including closing pubs, restaurants and bars at 10pm and limiting weddings to 15 people.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also banned people from visiting other households after daily case numbers reached their highest levels since 15 April.
