Xiaomi’s 108-megapixel phone has wild specs and a fair price
Xiaomi’s mission has always been simple: Cram as much high-end tech into a smartphone as possible, and offer it at the absolutely lowest price possible. The results aren’t always perfect, but it’s hard to complain when you’re getting so much for your money.
The Mi CC9 Pro is the company’s latest smartphone, unveiled in China on Tuesday. It costs $400, which is significantly cheaper than most Xiaomi phones. But its specs sheet reads like it’s from the future.
The Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro has five cameras on the back, with a 108-megapixel main sensor, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens that can do 5x optical zoom, a 12-megapixel sensor that specializes in bokeh shots, and a 2-megapixel lens for macro shots. Notably, it also has a F/1.7 8P lens, but only on the considerably pricier Premium Edition of the phone. The selfie camera on the front has a 32-megapixel sensor.
Numbers aren’t everything and it’s hard to judge how well this megapixel salad will work in real life, but on paper, it’s impressive, especially since both the latest iPhone and Samsung phones’ main cameras have 12-megapixel sensors.
Xiaomi’s new phone is impressive in other regards, too. It has a 6.47-inch AMOLED display with a waterdrop notch, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a massive 5,260mAh battery which supports 30W quick charging. The Mi CC9 Pro does lag behind top flagships in one department, though: It’s powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 730G.
The Mi CC9 Pro with 6/128GB of memory costs 2,799 yuan ($400). The price for the 8/256GB variant is 3,099 yuan ($443), and the Premium Edition costs 3,499 yuan ($500)
Xiaomi’s Mi CC9 Pro probably won’t be available outside of China, but the company is hosting an event in Madrid, Spain, tomorrow, where it will announce the Mi Note 10, likely with very similar specs.
