What to expect from the ‘iPhone 11’

Apple is set to announce new iPhones (iPhone 11? iPhone 11 Pro?) on Sept. 10. That means we’ll finally get up close and personal with its triple cameras.

The spotlight will be on new iPhones, but Apple is likely to unveil new Apple Watches as well.

It’s possible the tech giant has a surprise or two to spring on everyone, but we’re not expecting updates for iPads or MacBooks at this event.

Without further ado, here’s what we’re expecting Apple to announce at the Steve Jobs Theater in just about a week’.

iPhone 11 replacing iPhone XR

The Sept. 10 event will be all about the iPhone. Tim Cook and company will almost certainly be announcing the successor to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

Let’s start with the iPhone XR, since it’s the iPhone for everyone – and the most affordable one.

We’re expecting the iPhone XR to be replaced by an “iPhone 11” (or even just “new iPhone”) with a virtually identical design.

The iPhone 11 will retain its 6.1-inch LCD Liquid Retina display — complete with thicker bezels on all sides — and will still come in a handful of colors. However, there will be different color options. As rumored and seemingly confirmed on Apple’s invitation, the new phone will likely come in blue, yellow, red, and new green and purple colors. Coral appears to be dead and it’s unclear if the iPhone 11 will be available in black or white.

The iPhone 11 will probably get updated with a new A13 processor for faster performance running iOS 13.

The biggest upgrade to the iPhone 11 is expected to be the addition of a telephoto lens, giving the device a dual camera system like on iPhone XS and XS Max.

iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max replacing iPhone XS and XS Max

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max should also look very similar to the iPhone XS and XS Max, and will likely come with the same 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED displays, respectively.

These phones will likely share the same A13 chip and are rumored to come with larger batteries to accommodate a new reverse wireless charging feature for charging up AirPods.

The two iPhone 11 Pros will reportedly gain a third ultra-wide camera on the rear. Bloomberg says the new triple-camera system will take three photos at once and combine them together using AI software, producing a higher resolution image. The new iPhones might also boast better low-light shooting to compete with Google’s impressive Night Sight mode on its Pixel phones.

Apple is expected to also improve video recording on the new iPhone 11 Pro. With the iPhone XS and XS Max, Apple added wide stereo recording for better audio capture. According to Bloomberg, “Apple has developed a feature that allow users to retouch, apply effects, alter colors, reframe and crop video as it is being recorded live on the device.”

An improved Face ID sensor that works at more angles, matte glass instead of glossy, more durable design, better water resistance, and the death of 3D Touch are all also planned.

Apple Watch Series 5 replacing Series 4

We don’t know a whole lot about the new Apple Watch. Early reports suggest Apple will announce new models with ceramic and titanium cases.

That said, we don’t know if these are simply new materials for the Series 4 or new models for Series 5 that’ll be announced alongside aluminum and stainless steel models.

Any new Apple Watch features will be a surprise. New sleep-tracking features? Cellular features? FaceTime? All possible, but unlikely.
