It’s iPhone preorder day, and as usual, some models are a little harder to come by than others.
Apple opened up preorders for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max on Friday morning on its website. The phones officially launch and theoretically ship on Sept. 20. But some popular models will require longer waits, potentially into October.
I looked at the preorder pages for all three phones and, more importantly, every color, storage, and carrier combination I could find. While most of the new iPhones should ship within arm’s reach of the Sept. 20 launch date, there were a few with estimated shipping dates of “2-3 weeks,” according to the website.
“2-3 weeks” extends well past Sept. 20.

More specifically, the problem seems exclusive to the Pro and Pro Max models. I couldn’t find any regular iPhone 11 variants with egregious delays.
As of late Friday morning, there were long waits for many versions of the iPhone 11 Pro, especially the midnight green, silver, and space grey models. People who want the gold model, however, are in the clear.
Making matters more complicated, it varied by carrier. For instance, the space grey 256GB iPhone 11 Pro had long estimates for AT&T and T-Mobile, but not for Sprint and Verizon. Almost every version of the silver iPhone 11 Pro had the “2-3 weeks” distinction except for the 512GB version through Sprint.
The same held true of the midnight green Pro model. Its estimated shipping date was past Sept. 20 for most sizes and carriers.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max fared slightly better, maybe due to the fact fewer people are going to buy the most premium model. You might have trouble if you want a silver or midnight green Pro Max, but it seemed a little less backed up at a cursory glance than the regular Pro.
It’s also worth noting that unlocked and SIM-free iPhone 11s of all types seemed to be on track to ship on Sept. 20. It only got bad when trying to order one through a specific carrier.
Of course, this is a fluid situation and is subject to change. Let’s face it: You’re going to put a case on your iPhone 11 as soon as you get it. At some point, the color of the phone doesn’t matter that much.
