Trump shoots down Apple’s Mac Pro request
As he is wont to do, President Donald Trump made news with a single tweet on Friday morning. This time, Apple was on the receiving end.
Trump said in no uncertain terms that Apple would not be given relief from his administration’s trade war against China. If Apple wants to produce its beefy new Mac Pro desktop computer in China, it’ll have to suffer the same tariffs as everyone else.
Apple will not be given Tariff wavers, or relief, for Mac Pro parts that are made in China. Make them in the USA, no Tariffs!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2019
Apple sought exemption from Trump’s 25 percent tariffs earlier this month. The iPhone maker would like to avoid the extra taxes on its products made in China because, well, it could make its already-expensive products even more expensive.
Unfortunately for Apple, the company makes a majority of its hardware in China, and Trump doesn’t like that. The Mac Pro was the last holdout, the final Apple product made in the United States, until recently. Apple ran into significant production hurdles when trying to make the premium desktop computer in the U.S. — specifically, it couldn’t get enough screws.
If Apple moved production to the U.S., the company would either have to increase the cost of the $6,000 computer or eat the cost, neither of which are ideal.
