This exquisite silk structure was spun by 17,532 silkworms
Producing silk is a deadly task for insects because they are killed in the process. This project by the Mediated Matter Group & MIT demonstrates how silk can be harvested sustainably, using silkworms as active designers in the spinning of complex structures.
The project is one of The Index Project nominees for Index Award 2021 – a prize for innovative design solutions that address genuine needs and hold the potential to improve life.
