This $20 app will set off an alarm if someone tries to steal your MacBook
If you make a living on your computer, you likely live in constant fear of it being stolen. All it takes is one ill-timed bathroom break at a coffee shop, one quick-fingered thief on the train, or one home burglary to make your most expensive possession vanish forever — and that’s not even taking into account the value of the data stored on it.
Whether you’ve spent the last four years working on that novel, or just the last four weeks working on an expense report, you’ve got a lot of your life tied up in that hard drive, and losing it would be a huge disaster.
Beepify, a digital security service for your laptop, does a lot to alleviate those fears. After activation, Beepify waits for one of three triggers: the laptop is closed, unplugged, or the display is turned off. If one of those triggers is activated, the devices lets out a loud and alarming beep. The ides that would-be thieves should become terrified, or at very least publicly shamed, and give up their attempted theft to run off into the night.
The biggest advantage of Beepify is that it undoes the awkward and ineffective tradition of asking the person sitting next to you in the coffee shop to promise to protect your laptop while you run to the restroom. What exactly are you expecting them to do if a devoted thief shows up? Punch the guy, or slide tackle him? What if they’re too distracted by the screenplay they’re working on to even notice when your MacBook Air flies away in the hands of a prodigious thief?
While a lifetime subscription is typically $299, Beepify is currently on sale for just $39.99. But if you’re a bit more cautious than that, there’s also a one-year subscription (a $59.99 value) for just $19.99.
