SimpliSafe launches the $169 Video Doorbell Pro
The connected doorbell market is expanding.
Modular home security manufacturer SimpliSafe is launching the Video Doorbell Pro nationwide on Tuesday for $169.99. While the price undercuts other offerings like the Nest Hello ($229), this doorbell has multiple sensors and a layer of intelligent software to keep it competitive.
The last thing any connected device’s manufacturer wants is to ping you with false alerts, especially with a smart doorbell that’s potentially triggered by passersby or animals. To that end, SimpliSafe has worked to ensure no accidental buzzes make their way to you.
An HD camera and a heat sensor work in tandem with recognition software for the Video Doorbell Pro to alert users when a human is approaching the door. The camera has dynamic range software built in, which can analyze and clear up images in the live feed. Thanks to the doorbell’s built-in microphones, you can also have two-way communication using the iOS or Android app.
The Video Doorbell Pro is compatible with a range of doorbells. This is important as some older houses have less voltage than newer homes. It works with voltage rated from 8v to 24v, a broad spectrum that covers the majority of households. It also works with digital or analog wiring, which expands the range.
It might look extremely similar to the Nest Hello with its rounded design, but according to SimpliSafe, that’s just a coincidence. Like the rest of the company’s third-generation security kit that launched in January 2018, this doorbell is made in partnership with IDEO. It mixes a durable plastic build with high-tech hardware and a metal button.
SimpliSafe is releasing several interchangeable faceplates for the Video Doorbell Pro, including Obsidian, Cloud, and Jade at launch. More options will arrive in the future as well. Those who purchase the Video Doorbell Pro from Best Buy will get the aforementioned three faceplates for a limited time.
The doorbell itself is relatively small and shouldn’t draw too much attention – a legitimate concern, as it’s not a cheap piece of hardware to install. While it can work as a standalone doorbell, it works best when used in conjunction with a full SimpliSafe system. This way it can record events throughout the day and report back to you.
SimpliSafe’s Video Doorbell Pro is available now for $169.99 from the brand’s online store and Best Buy.
