TL;DR: H&R Block’s online tax preparation packages are currently $40 to $70 cheaper than the equivalents on TurboTax’s website. As of March 1, you can file federal plus one state at H&R Block for less than the cost of federal only at TurboTax.

No, you probably won’t go to jail if you do your taxes wrong. However, there are a few common mistakes that could really screw your plans of blowing that return on a May vacation. Unsurprisingly, most of them happen when doing taxes on paper because it’s ~free.~

Things that are easy to blow over — like writing the wrong social security number, making mathematical errors, entering the wrong filing status, or even forgetting to sign — can delay your check by up to two months or lower your expected refund by a few hundred dollars.

This doesn’t mean you’re stuck with paying to meet with a preparer in person, though. Taxes filed electronically have an error rate of less than one percent, as the online form will notify you if something looks off. Using H&R Block’s online service just got cheaper, too: As of March 1, H&R Block is anywhere from $40 to $70 cheaper than TurboTa  (including state and federal fees), depending on which package you need.

Here’s a price breakdown:

  • H&R Block Deluxe for $59.48 versus TurboTax Deluxe for $110: Best for maximizing credits and deductions, HSA contributions, and your average W-2 situations.

  • H&R Block Premium for $74.78 versus TurboTax Premium for $140: Best for freelancers, contractors, and investors.

  • H&R Block Self-Employed for $96.98 versus TurboTax Self-Employed for $170: Best for self-employed folks and small business owners.

The prices listed above are for federal plus one state. For instance, the basic Deluxe online package is on sale for $22.49 plus $36.99 for each state filed. TurboTax is currently charging $50 for each state, plus the cost of whatever package you need. The cheapest federal fee starts at $60, meaning doing your state and federal on H&R Block could literally be cheaper than just the cost of federal on TurboTax. This tea is piping hot.

If you need help, there’s a tax preparer in a pop-up chat box waiting to offer guidance (a real human, not a bot).
