GMC’s electric Hummer SUV looks like an off-roading beast
GMC unveiled its electric Hummer SUV on Saturday during the Final Four. On Monday, it revealed more features — like a removable glass roof.
After Saturday’s reveal, the Edition 1 model sold out. But people can reserve three other versions of the SUV with a $100 refundable deposit.
The first editions are expected to arrive by the end of 2023 and start at $105,595. The base model is scheduled to launch in 2024 at $79,995. They should be available in eight colors, including matte green, white, and orange.
The SUV is designed to be more nimble than the Hummer e-truck revealed in October, with better maneuverability for city driving. Its wheel base is 9 inches shorter than the truck, but still sits five. And the SUV doesn’t have an open truck bed. That makes it 20 inches shorter than the SUV.
The SUV’s trunk is opened from the driver’s side. As for the roof, the glass panels and part of the frame can be removed and stored in a compartment in the trunk. (The roof can also be removed from the Hummer EV truck.)
For extreme, off-the-beaten path driving, the myGMC app features satellite trail mapping. The car can also become a backup generator with 3 kilowatts of power — the amount of energy it takes to blast three hours of central air conditioning. With the right accessories and enough juice, the e-SUV can jumpstart another electric vehicle.
Like the Hummer truck, the SUV can use Extract mode to lift the vehicle over rocks and other obstacles. It can also drive diagonally with CrabWalk, which could be useful on city streets for moving around nuisances like parked delivery trucks.
The SUV has a 13.4-inch touchscreen dashboard that displays the car’s energy information and battery condition with 3D graphics. It also shows 15 camera views from around the car. Drivers who pay $5,000 more for the Extreme Off-Road package get two more views from underneath the car, as well as an armored underbelly and special tires among other “tactical” features.
While GMC said it expects the SUV to be more popular than the original Hummer EV, the supertruck is also still available to reserve. The first electric Hummer truck will beat the SUV to the road with the first versions expected to arrive in the U.S. by the end of this year.
