Dark mode will finally darken iPhone apps in iOS 13

Dark mode is coming to the iPhone.

At the WWDC developers conference in San Jose Monday, Apple software engineering senior vice president Craig Federighi showed off the black background setting. “iOS now lives in the dark,” he said.

When iOS 13 rolls out to phones in the fall dark mode can switch on for many built-in Apple apps like notes, calendar, maps, and photos. Messaging and the sharing screen will also darken, along with widgets.

Apple Music in dark mode might actually entice users from the already-dark competitor music streaming app Spotify.

Other apps like Twitter and Slack already offer a dark mode version for mobile apps.

A report earlier this year hinted at a system-wide dark mode, and now it’s official.

As Federighi said, “Let’s begin our descent into darkness.”
