Apple’s next iPad could have Face ID and thinner bezels, and no notch
Apple’s next iPad could look a lot like the iPhone X.
The company’s next iPad Pro could ditch the home button for thinner bezels and Face ID, according to code uncovered from the latest iOS 12 beta.
The code was first discovered by 9to5Mac, which found a new iPad icon that appears to show an iPad Pro with smaller bezels and no home button. Notably, there’s no notch visible in the icon — possibly because the tablet’s thin bezels are big enough to accommodate the sensors without carving out part of the display.
Notch or no notch, it does seem increasingly certian the next iPad Pro will come with Face ID. Developer Guilherme Rambo also discovered a reference to Face ID for the iPad in iOS 12’s code.
There’s no reference to a specific iPad model in either case, but it would certainly point to the next generation of iPad Pro models. The TrueDepth camera required for Face ID is currently exclusive to the iPhone X, so it makes sense Apple would save the feature for its highest end iPad as well.
The upgrade could also be good news for the iPad line, which had a relatively bland year. Apple opted only to make minor improvements to its lower-end tablet, rater than updating the more expensive Pro line.
Now, it looks like that might finally change.
