One. Less. Thing.

Apple has officially canceled its long-promised wireless charging pad dubbed AirPower —vaporware that always looked lame as hell. The company copped to the half-expected news on March 29, surely devastating the few people that pre-ordered the $79 wireless-charging AirPods case

The rest of us, however, can rest easy in the knowledge that we never would have purchased one of those mousepad-looking things anyway. Sure, other companies make wireless-charging pads and some of them work more or less fine, but we can be almost sure that whatever Apple planned on charging for what amounted to an ergonomic power strip was going to be too much.

And, just maybe, Apple agrees with that sentiment. In a statement, the company admitted that — as it currently stood — AirPower just kind of sucked. Even by its own standards.

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project,” explained Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, Dan Riccio.

Not to be.

In other words, Apple decided that AirPower was never going to work and figured now was the time to bail. Props to the brain geniuses of Cupertino for not throwing good money after bad, I guess.

“We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch,” continued Riccio — clearly not wanting to admit that Apple just saved those very customers from purchasing what would surely have amounted to the company’s most unnecessary offering. Well, one of the most, anyway.

But perhaps we’re being too harsh. Some Apple fans were definitely expecting the fancy mat, even as soon as today, and we have to imagine they’re disappointed by the news. Possibly, just maybe, we can console them with the knowledge that the AirPower wireless charger always looked dumb, and Apple never cared about their feelings anyway.
