Apple officially cancels AirPower wireless charging mat
It’s official: Apple’s AirPower wireless charging mat is dead.
The company confirmed AirPower’s cancelation in an emailed statement to TechCrunch.
“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project,” Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio said. “We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch.”
Despite AirPower’s cancellation, Riccio said Apple still believes the future is wireless. “We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward,”
AirPower was first announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone X and was supposed to be the one accessory to wirelessly charge an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once.
But after missing its launch in later 2017, and then failing again to show up during the iPhone XS and XR’s announcement, it was clear something was wrong.
