LONDON — Theresa May was visibly tearful on Friday morning as she announced that she would stand down as prime minister and Conservative leader in June.

In an emotional statement outside 10 Downing Street, the prime minister said she will resign as Conservative leader but stay on as prime minister until her successor is elected.

The prime minister broke into tears at the end of her speech as she said she was “the second prime minister but certainly not the last.”

Speaking of her departure, she added: “I do so with no ill will but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love.”
