Video shows Angela Merkel shaking in public, second time this month

It’s been only a little over a week since German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen shaking heavily during the reception of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin.

Now, eight days later, Merkel has been seen shaking uncontrollably again during an official state function.

The incident occurred during a ceremony to swear in the newly-chosen Judicial Minister Christine Lambrecht in Castle Bellevue, the residence of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Merkel was standing next to Steinmeier, who was giving a speech, when her body began to shake. The Chancellor grasped her arm to try and calm the shaking but to no avail.

She also refused a glass of water that was brought to her. The shaking lasted for around two minutes.

The Chancellor stayed at Bellevue for the duration of the ceremony, moving around and looking visibly better after the short episode, as the video shows.

How Merkel explained her shaking

After her shaking episode in Bellevue the Chancellor took her place in parliament to watch the official swearing in of Lambrecht.

Her spokesperson Steffen Seibert told reporters at Deutsche Presse-Agentur that Merkel was feeling good and that her planned trip to the G20 summit in Japan was not in doubt: “Everything will commence as planned.”

According to DW Politik, when Merkel was seen shaking during the visit of President Zelensky, she later argued in a joint press conference that she had had too little to drink and that she was feeling better after having had a few glasses of water.

When visiting the town of Goslar a day after the incident she quipped that it would be wise “to cut back on the coffee and drink more water”, according to Morgenpost.

Merkel is 64 years old and during her 14-year tenure as Chancellor, her health has never been in doubt.

Though Merkel did once sustain a hip injury during a ski trip in 2014, which led her to cancel a few appointments and international visits, she has never missed a day in office due to sickness.

In 2011 she used crutches for a period after knee surgery.
