Sean Spicer says he hopes ‘Dancing With the Stars’ will be a ‘politics-free zone’ amid casting backlash

President Donald Trump’s former White House press secretary Sean Spicer told the Hollywood Reporter that he hopes “Dancing With the Stars” will be a “politics-free zone” amid backlash following the decision to cast him on the show.

Spicer, who will appear on season 28 of the ABC show, said that he hoped his season could be an example of unity.

“I hope it will be a politics-free zone,” the former press secretary said.

“My hope is that at the end of the season, [host] Tom [Bergeron] looks back on this and realizes what a great example it was of being able to bring people of really diverse backgrounds together to have fun with each other, engage in a real civil and respectful way, and maybe show millions of Americans how we can get back to that kind of interaction.”

Bergeron revealed on Twitter Wednesday that he had hoped the new season of “Dancing With the Stars” would be “free of inevitably divisive bookings from ANY party affiliations.”

Bergeron said in his heartfelt message that he wanted the show to be a “joyful respite from our exhausting political climate,” and thought he and producers were in agreement about that approach for the new season.

After it was revealed earlier this week that Spicer would compete on the show — along with Lamar Odom, Christie Brinkley, and former “Bachelorette” star Hannah Brown — there was a significant backlash on Twitter, which even got the hashtag #BoycottDWTS trending.

“Queer Eye” star Karamo Brown, who will also compete on Spicer’s season, got his own taste of the backlash after calling the former press secretary “a good guy” and saying he was “excited” to engage in “respectful conversations” with Spicer.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC executive producer Andrew Llinares said, “We’ve got a great and diverse cast. We’re excited about the season.”
