‘Stranger Things 4’ teaser features clock chimes from a UK landmark

Netflix announced “Stranger Things 4” with a new teaser video, and in the creepy scene you can see a clock embedded into a tree. The clock ticks to midnight, and then chimes several notes as the screen goes dark.

The phrase “we’re not in Hawkins anymore” (itself a reference to “The Wizard of Oz”) appears one word at a time as the bells chime.

This chiming tune matches very closely with the sound of the real-life Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower— or “Old Joe” — located in the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston, United Kingdom. Could Eleven and the “Stranger Things” kids be heading to England?

Here’s the teaser video, in which you can see the clock tower to the left and then hear the bells chime:

And here’s a video of Old Joe chiming on the University of Birmingham campus:

The “Stranger Things 4” chiming could just be a generic grandfather clock, but the careful placement of the clock in the foreground of the video combined with the hint about season four not being “in Hawkins anymore” feels to us like an invitation for theorizing.

The chimes definitely don’t match London’s Big Ben or the famous Kremlin Clock in Moscow, Russia. But we feel confident that it’s a close match to Old Joe. Even the clock faces look similar.

Russia will likely be a featured location for the fourth season of “Stranger Things,” since the mid-credits scene after the “Stranger Things 3” finale showed Russians holding a Demogorgon and hinted at an American captive (who is likely Hopper).

Maybe Eleven and Joyce and the others will travel to the UK in the hopes of getting information that will lead them to Hopper. Or maybe we’ll just see Dr. Owens, the US government agent tracking and researching the Upside Down, visit the university’s campus.

Either way, buckle in for an international adventure on “Stranger Things 4.” Netflix has yet to announce a planned premiere date, so keep theorizing about those clock chimes in the meantime.
