A teenager has been charged with murdering a father who was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver.

Peter Duncan, 52, died after the attack outside a Greggs bakery in Old Eldon Square, Newcastle city centre, at around 6.20pm on Wednesday.

Police said it appeared to have been a “chance encounter” which led to “an unprovoked attack”.

The 17-year-old charged with murder will appear in court on Monday.

Mr Duncan suffered a single puncture wound to the chest and later died of his injuries at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Eight teenagers were arrested in connection with the incident and four have been released with no further action.

His family released a statement describing Mr Duncan as a “devoted father” who was “always first to help others”.
