Man who rammed police car and drove wrong way on motorway jailed | UK News

A man who rammed a police car and then fled by going the wrong way down a motorway has been jailed.

John Taylor, 30, was filmed turning his seven tonne truck around on the M18 and then driving at speed into oncoming traffic.

Footage released by South Yorkshire Police shows him narrowly avoid cars and lorries, before he turns round again and ends up fleeing on foot.

The pursuit began when Taylor was spotted by officers at around 10.30am on 10 January in Fishlake Nab, close to Stainforth, near Doncaster.

He refused to stop when told to and reversed several times into a police car at speed.

Taylor then headed off towards the M18 and joined the motorway, where he then turned round in an attempt to escape.

After being involved in several near-misses, he stopped again and turned back before stopping for a last time in the fast lane, running across the motorway and making off on foot.

He was later found in a caravan and arrested.

Taylor, of the Riverside Traveller Park in Doncaster, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to dangerous driving, breaching a suspended sentence and assaulting police officers.

He was sentenced to 28 months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court.

Detective Constable William McClean, officer in charge of the inquiry, said: “He endangered countless lives that day through his reckless and dangerous actions.

“We are pleased with the sentence he has received and hope that it acts as a deterrent for anyone else who drives dangerously on our roads.”
