Some flights have been cancelled at Heathrow Airport following “technical issues” with departure boards and check-in systems.

Passengers are reporting they have been forced to find temporary whiteboards to work out flight details.

And photos on social media showed blank electronic screens where there should be gate numbers.

The situation at the airport was described on Twitter by one passenger as “utter chaos”.

The west London hub said extra staff had been put on to help with directing people to their gates.

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “We are continuing to experience technical issues which are currently being resolved.

“We have additional passenger ambassadors being deployed across our terminals both airside and landside to help direct our customers to their departure gates.

“We apologise for the disruption this is causing our passengers.”

British Airways told a customer on Twitter: “We’re aware Heathrow Airport is currently experiencing a technical issue that is impacting some of their IT systems across the airport, affecting a number of airlines.

“We are working with them to resolve the issue as a priority and apologise for the delay to our customers.”
