Girl, 6, dies after being hit by car: Two people arrested

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a six-year-old girl died after being hit by a car.

A 27-year-old man and a woman, 26, are being questioned about the death of the child in Smethwick, West Midlands, on Saturday.

Witnesses said the girl was with a man who appeared to be her father when she was knocked down at a pedestrian crossing on the Oldbury Road dual carriageway at around 10.50pm.

“We are investigating the circumstances leading to this tragic event,” Detective Constable Damian Gibson said.

“Although we have two in custody, we’re appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have CCTV which can help with our inquiries.

Mr Gibson also asked motorists who may have captured the incident on dash-cams to get in touch as they could have important information.

The girl’s family is receiving support from family liaison officers, he added.

West Midlands Police tweeted that a “young girl has lost her life” following the incident.

A group of youths went to help the girl after she was hit, according to local traders and residents.

A worshipper at a nearby Islamic community said he knew the girl’s father.

“The girl was just a lovely, happy, smiling child. This is a terrible tragedy, it’s just so sad,” he said.

:: Officers asked anyone with information to call 101, quoting log number 2933 of 28/07.
