Geraint Thomas looks certain to win Tour de France after keeping yellow jersey

Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas looks certain to win the Tour de France after keeping the yellow jersey in the race’s penultimate stage.

Thomas began the 31km time trial course from Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle to Espelette at 3.29pm, as he bid to become the first Welshman to secure a Tour de France title.

He was on course to win the stage but eased up in the closing stages, meaning Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin finished first.

Despite wobbling on a tight bend and nearly going down, he went through the first section fastest.

He was 14 seconds faster than Froome and and 16 quicker Dumoulin.

Thomas had already reached touching distance of win the tour after sprinting to second-place on the final mountain stage.

It earned him six bonus points to increase his general classification lead over Tom Dumoulin to two minutes and five seconds ahead of Saturday’s time trial.

The four-time Tour de France winner and current holder Chris Froome, also of Team Sky, dropped to fourth behind Primoz Roglic of Slovenia.
