England win fifth Test to draw series but Australia retain Ashes | UK News

England have won the fifth Ashes Test to draw the series 2-2 but holders Australia retain the urn.

The home side won by 135 runs at The Oval in south London.

Australia had been aiming for a first outright series win in England in 18 years.

But the tourists were thwarted after being dismissed for 263 in their second innings late on day four.

It was the first time since 1972 that the two teams have drawn an Ashes series.

Australia’s Steve Smith, who was such a formidable presence during the five match series, was out for 23 on Sunday – by far his lowest score against England in this summer’s clashes.

He was caught by Ben Stokes off a Stuart Broad delivery.

England selector James Taylor tweeted: “Top performance from the boys to level the series! It’s been another fascinating Ashes! What a summer it’s been for English cricket!”
