More than half of children say they would feel “helpless” if they saw somebody who was injured in an accident, the British Red Cross has found.

It comes as the government plans to ensure all children have learned first aid by the time they have left secondary school from 2020.

Nearly a quarter of children who spoke to the British Red Cross said they had been in a situation where somebody required first aid, while nine out of 10 said they would feel “more confident” to help in an emergency if they knew the skills.

The roll-out in schools also comes after the Manchester Arena bombing inquiry, where it was found members of the public tried to help the injured and dying but didn’t have the necessary skills.

Take the St John Ambulance test below to test your knowledge of first aid.
