Thieves have stolen tonnes of copper and lead from listed buildings on Brighton seafront over Christmas.

Sussex Police said more than £10,000 of damage was caused when the metals were stripped between 11pm on 23 December and 1.40am on Boxing Day.

Around 10 tonnes of lead were taken from three shelters on the seafront.

Copper was also stolen from the roof of the historic 19th century Madeira Lift, which carries people down to the beach and was restored in 2013.

All the structures affected have Grade II listed status.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious, or who has photos or dash-cam video, to contact them on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
