Accrington: Family of missing mother told woman’s body found in cemetery | UK News

The family of a missing teaching assistant have been informed that a woman’s body has been found in a cemetery, Lancashire police have said.

Officers were called at around 8pm on Saturday to Accrington Cemetery after a member of the public found the body.

Police have not confirmed the woman’s identity and have urged people not to speculate on social media.

Mother-of-two Lindsay Birbeck, 47, was last seen walking on Burnley Road, near Accrington, on 12 August.

She has not been since and her family have described her disappearance as “completely out of character”.

On Friday, police had issued an appeal to walkers and dash cam owners in a bid to identify a potential witness.

Forensic experts were called to conduct a detailed examination of the scene.

A police spokesperson said: “We are not in a position to confirm the woman’s identity at this stage and while the family of missing teaching assistant Lindsay Birbeck have been told of this latest development we would ask once again that people do not speculate on social media as this could cause the family additional distress.”

A Home Office post-mortem will now be carried out to try to establish the cause of death.
