How to change your Instagram username

Published

on

Unlike most social media platforms, Instagram allows you to change your username. Whether you’ve actually changed your name or just fancy something different for a while, it’s quick and easy to alter your Instagram username, both on the .com desktop version of Instagram and in mobile apps.

Here’s how to change your username on Instagram.

What is your Instagram username?

Your Instagram username is shown at the top of your Instagram profile and appears in your personalized Instagram URL, e.g., www.instagram.com/yourusername.

It must be less than 30 characters and can only be made up of letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.

Instagram username versus Instagram display name

Your display name is different from your official Instagram username. Your display name appears on your profile underneath your avatar photo on mobile Instagram and to the right of it on desktop Instagram.

Your display name can be anything you want it to be. It can contain special characters and emojis. You can change your display name any time you want, as many times as you want, using the same process as changing your Instagram username.

How to change your Instagram username on Instagram.com

Once you’re logged into the desktop version of Instagram.com, go to your profile and click on the “Edit Profile” option.

In the next screen, you’ll see text boxes with “Name” (this is your display name) and “Username” next to them.

Simply overtype what’s in the boxes to change either your display name, username, or both. When you’re done, click “Submit” at the bottom of the page.

How to change your Instagram username on Instagram mobile apps

The process for the Instagram mobile apps is very similar. In your Instagram app, head to your profile page and tap the “Edit Profile” option.

Then tap “Done” on iOS. On Android, hit the check mark.

What if the new username I want is taken?

If the username you want is already in use, Instagram will alert you to this after you click “Submit” or tap on “Done.” Re-try different variations until you find a username that’s close to the one you want.
