The CIA has launched its Instagram with an ‘eye spy’ picture
Welcome to the ‘gram, CIA fam!
Ok, I’m sorry for that rhyme. But sometimes you’ve gotta roll out the welcome mat for your friendly shady government agency with a problematic legacy, right?
On Thursday, the CIA officially joined Instagram with the handle — wait for it — @CIA. This makes good on CIA director Gina Haspel’s somewhat off-the-cuff announcement earlier in April that the agency had an account in the works.
Haspel said at the time that maintaining an agency presence on social media was about increasing transparency — a difficult task for an agency dedicated to the collection of secrets.
“Joining Instagram is another way we’re sharing CIA’s stories and recruiting talented Americans to serve here,” Nicole de Haay, a CIA media spokesperson, said in a statement sent to Mashable.
So how did the CIA make its Insta debut? With a cheeky “eye spy” picture.

Here’s a closer look.
Hey, the CIA may be responsible meddling in foreign wars to install pro-USA governments, but at least it knows how to have fun on social media!
“Through the account, we’ll give a peek into Agency life, but we can’t promise any selfies from secret locations,” de Haay said. LOL!
“We’re looking to spark the curiosity of Instagram’s users about the many ways CIA’s global mission has us going where others cannot go and doing what others cannot do.”
Sounds cool! Follow for follow, CIA?
