YouTube app will soon return to Amazon Fire TV devices
Amazon and YouTube are buddies again, and as a result of their restored friendship, the YouTube app will soon return to Fire TV devices and Fire TV smart TVs.
Similarly, Amazon’s Prime Video will also support Chromecast devices and Android TV products.
YouTube will return to Fire TV devices “in the coming months” according to Amazon. Apps for YouTube TV and YouTube Kids will be available on Amazon’s streaming media devices “later this year.”
“We are excited to work with Amazon to launch the official YouTube apps on Fire TV devices worldwide,” said Heather Rivera, Global Head of Product Partnerships at YouTube. “Bringing our flagship YouTube experience to Amazon Fire TV gives our users even more ways to watch the videos and creators they love.”
The return of the YouTube app to Fire TV devices ends the years-long feud between Amazon and Google, which saw the latter remove the app from Amazon’s streaming devices in late 2017.
Although you could still load YouTube via the Fire TV’s web browser, videos weren’t optimized to take advantage of Fire TV devices to deliver the best picture and sound quality.
However, with the YouTube app, supported Amazon Fire TV devices will be soon able to stream videos at up to 4K resolution in HDR at up to 60 fps.
Same goes for the Prime Video app for Chromecast and Android TV devices also arriving “in the comping months.” Like customers who own a 4K-supported Fire TV device, anyone with a 4K-ready Chromecast or 4K smart TV can stream select content from Prime Video at up to 4K resolution.
The new pact is a big win for consumers who unfortunately ended up caught between the two bickering companies.
