RED’s holographic Hydrogen phone gets a little more real
RED’s radically different phone, the Hydrogen One, has been approved by the FCC, which probably means it’s getting ready for launch.
The phone, which RED claims will be the first-ever phone with a “holographic display,” was originally scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2018, but that has later been changed to “this summer.” An exact date has not yet been revealed.
Phonescoop, which first noticed the filing, has dug out some interesting new details about the device. It will have four cameras (two on the front and two on the back), dual SIM trays, NFC and a massive 4,510mAh battery. The phone will support all U.S. LTE bands except T-Mobile’s Band 71, meaning you should probably not expect to see it in T-Mobile stores. AT&T and Verizon announced in May they will sell the phone.
The most interesting feature of the Hydrogen One, however, is still its screen, which will let you watch traditional 2D content, stereo 3D content, and “holographic RED Hydrogen 4-View” content, all without special glasses.
The phone will be modular, with one future attachment being something that lets you shoot higher quality motion and still images, as well as Hydrogen 4-View content images, according to the project’s website.
RED Hydrogen One is one of the most expensive phones out there. Pre-orders are currently closed, but while they were open, pricing was $1,295 for the aluminum variant and $1,595 for the titanium version.
