When iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2 start rolling out this week, the HomePod also received a software update. It enables features such as Siri’s ability to identify different users and the seamless Handoff between an iPhone and the HomePod. Just one problem: the software update is also bricking some HomePod devices.
As MacRumors reports, software update downloads and installs as expected. However, when it tries to restart, Apple’s HomePod doesn’t finish the process and thus can’t complete any actions. Siri doesn’t respond, and the smart speaker fails to show on any synced devices.
Users say they’re stuck with a “white swirl” on top of the HomePod even after trying to factory reset their units. In some cases, users are unable to complete a factory reset.
As such, Apple has pulled the software update and is advising users against resetting their HomePod devices at the moment. Users who already attempted a factory reset are directed to contact Apple Support for additional instructions. Apple might be required to replace HomePod devices that are bricked, one Reddit user tells MacRumors.
Once the software gets tweaked, Apple should issue another software update that adds the expected upgrades (hopefully) without issue, including:
-
The ability for HomePod to recognize the voices of different family members to provide a personalized experience
-
Handoff music, podcasts or phone calls by bringing your iPhone close to HomePod
-
Add music to your HomeKit scenes
-
Play relaxing high-quality soundtracks with Ambient Sounds
-
Set sleep timers to fall asleep to music or Ambient Sounds
